Assemblée générale de la FECAFOOT : le ministre des Sports s’oppose à la réélection de Samuel Eto’o
Tensions are running high between Samuel Eto'o and the Cameroonian Minister of Sports. Four years after taking the helm of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), the former FC Barcelona and Indomitable Lions star is aiming for a second term. But his re-election, scheduled for the elective general assembly this Saturday, November 29, is being fiercely contested by state authorities, plunging Cameroonian football into a new period of turmoil.
This Saturday, November 29th, Samuel Eto'o is preparing to run for another four-year term. The election seems almost a formality, as his camp appears assured of re-election by acclamation. Yet, behind the scenes, the institutional battle is raging.
In a letter dated November 14, the Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, ordered FECAFOOT to suspend the electoral process. He accuses the outgoing committee of having initiated the electoral procedures in violation of the 2021 statutes and of having arbitrarily excluded several clubs from the process. The ministry also cites sanctions deemed irregular and exclusions that are being challenged.
The minister also criticizes Samuel Eto'o for failing to act on several recommendations made last August to ease internal tensions and ensure management complies with the statutes. Faced with this standoff, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi appealed to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, to demand the outright cancellation of the November 29th election, citing "threats to public order."
FECAFOOT's response was swift. In a statement, it announced that representatives from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) would be present to oversee the elective general assembly. According to the federation, their presence aims to "guarantee the smooth running of the vote and the election of the president and members of the Executive Committee."
This approach makes perfect sense in light of FIFA's statutes, which strictly prohibit any political interference in the management of affiliated federations. In 2024, the world governing body did not hesitate to suspend the Malian Football Federation for similar actions.
With less than three weeks to go before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, this climate of crisis is worrying observers. The instability could affect the preparation of the Indomitable Lions, already under pressure after inconsistent results.
