Barrages Ligue 1/Ligue 2 : Nice de Yehvann Diouf et Antoine Mendy assure son maintien
OGC Nice will indeed be playing in Ligue 1 next season. After a goalless draw in the first leg (0-0), the Eagles, featuring Senegalese internationals Yehvann Diouf and Antoine Mendy, comfortably defeated AS Saint-Étienne (4-1) this Friday in the second leg of the relegation/promotion playoff.
In a match that was much more lively than the first half, Saint-Étienne looked dangerous from the opening minutes.
Cardona thought he had opened the scoring before his goal was disallowed for offside, while Stassin and Cardona took turns sending shivers through the Nice defence.
Nice then responded with several clear chances. Back in the starting eleven, Wahi hit Larsonneur's post before Clauss was denied the opening goal by an exceptional save from Pedro. Despite the intensity of the match, the two teams went into the break with the score still 0-0.
After the break, Nice finally made the difference. In the 62nd minute, Clauss capitalized on a poor clearance by the Saint-Étienne defense to open the scoring with a precise left-footed shot (1-0). Nice then launched numerous attacks but were unable to secure the win.
Saint-Étienne got back into the game thanks to a penalty awarded after a handball by Antoine Mendy and converted by Davitashvili (1-1, 80th minute). But Nice's reaction was immediate: a minute later, Boudache restored his team's lead with a coolly taken side-footed finish (2-1, 81st minute).
Late in the game, Wahi sealed the victory with a brace (87th, 90+1st minute), securing a resounding 4-1 win for Nice. This victory guarantees Nice's survival in Ligue 1, while Saint-Étienne remains relegated.
