Belgique : sanctionné par son club pour avoir célébré le sacre des Lions, Ibrahima Sonko assume
In Belgium, former Senegalese international Ibrahima Sonko, assistant coach of OH Leuven and "talent manager," has been removed from the first team. This decision follows his celebration of Senegal's victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final on the club bus, after his team had just suffered a league defeat.
In an interview with L'Observateur, Sonko maintains that his reaction was not disproportionate:
“Four minutes after the missed penalty, we scored. At that moment, you hear the ‘Yes’ from my side. It wasn’t loud, but it was remarkable,” he confides.
Immediate sanction: withdrawal from the first team
The axe fell two days after the incident. On Tuesday, the OH Leuven management made their decision. Despite his apologies to the staff, the former defender was dismissed.
"The director informed me that he had decided to remove me from the group, that is to say from the first team squad. Which I accepted, without comment. [...] For the moment, the order is to return to work with the U23s," explains the interviewee to the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.
"If I had to do it again, I would."
Far from being repentant, the former Stoke City player displays complete serenity in the face of a potential permanent ban. For him, no regrets are possible.
"How can I regret being happy when my country won the cup? It's insane. Senegal is my country, not theirs. We needed this final, we won it, that's all that matters."
