Benfica /Real Madrid : l’UEFA ouvre une enquête pour des faits présumés de racisme
The European football governing body has decided to take up the case after the incidents that occurred during the tense match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid, won by the Madrid team (0-1) on Tuesday in the Champions League play-off.
During the match in Lisbon, Real Madrid's Brazilian winger, Vinicius Junior, denounced racist insults he claimed to have received. These accusations quickly attracted the attention of UEFA, which already has a zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory behavior.
After reviewing the official reports submitted by the match officials, UEFA announced the opening of a disciplinary investigation to shed full light on these allegations involving a player from the Lisbon club.
"A UEFA ethics and discipline inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of discriminatory behavior during the Champions League play-off match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid, played on February 17, 2026. Further information will be communicated in due course," the European body said in a statement released the day after the match.
This new case has once again reignited the debate on the fight against racism in European stadiums, a fight that UEFA claims it wants to intensify through exemplary sanctions in the event of proven incidents.
