CAN 2025: C'EST QUOI LE SYSTÈME SUBAIR, CETTE TECHNOLOGIE QUI SAUVE LA PELOUSE DE RABAT FACE AUX PLUIES DILUVIENNES ?
While weather forecasts predict torrential rains until the end of the group stages of this 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, cutting-edge technology appears to be saving the pitch at Rabat's brand-new stadium, the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. This technology uses a water drainage system called SubAir.
In this first week of competition, torrential rains have unexpectedly battered pitches across the Kingdom. Having suffered from prolonged droughts for several years, Morocco finds some relief in these downpours... but at the expense of the experience for the many fans who have come for this 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rain showers – sometimes torrential downpours – had little impact on the level of play or the condition of the pitches, as evidenced by the opening match between Morocco and Comoros. The grand opening took place in the brand-new Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, equipped with cutting-edge technology: the SubAir system. This installation supports the pitch and allows for efficient water absorption.
Lawn aeration, drainage and temperature regulation
These images are a world away from the 2014 Club World Cup disaster, where some matches played in the same stadium – before its renovation – were ruined by bad weather and huge puddles that slowed the ball down. In the meantime, the organizers have traded the traditional giant puddle for SubAir technology.
A drainage system installed beneath the lawn, consisting of interlocking plastic blocks that store and filter rainwater. This system can hold between 600,000 and 1,120,000 liters of water. An advanced system that also provides aeration, drainage, and temperature regulation for the lawn.
While the magnificent Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium is the first in Africa to be equipped with this technology, according to Tunisian coach Sami Trabelsi, who was "impressed by the infrastructure," equally effective drainage systems have been observed on other pitches. "After three hours of heavy rain, the pitch remained in very good condition. Thank you to Morocco, it allowed us to play our football," he said after Tunisia's victory against Uganda at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.
