CAN Maroc 2025 : Blessure de Romain Saiss, Regragui rassure
Morocco made a perfect start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday in Rabat. While the result was a success, it was marred by a moment of great concern: the injury to central defender Romain Saïss, who was forced to leave the pitch after just fifteen minutes.
During a defensive play, the Atlas Lions' central defender injured his knee following a challenge with Rafiki Saïd. The 35-year-old quickly realized his match was over. In tears as he was substituted in the 18th minute, the Moroccan captain cast doubt on his continued participation in the tournament.
A pillar of the defense and a leader in the dressing room, Saïss plays a key role in Walid Regragui's system, especially in the absence of Achraf Hakimi, who was rested on the bench. His premature exit has therefore immediately reignited fears of a major blow to Morocco's ambitions.
Speaking at a press conference after the match, the national team coach sought to reassure everyone. Walid Regragui dismissed the possibility of a permanent withdrawal, indicating that the injury did not appear to be as serious as it initially seemed. Further medical examinations were to be carried out to precisely assess the condition of the defender's knee.
While awaiting the results, the Moroccan staff remains hopeful of quickly recovering the mainstay of the Moroccan defense, as the Atlas Lions intend to confirm their status as favorites in this AFCON being played at home.
