CAN Maroc 2026 : Samuel Eto’o lourdement sanctionné par la CAF
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a disciplinary sanction on Samuel Eto'o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot). The continental body has decided to suspend the former Cameroonian international for four matches, along with a fine of $20,000, or approximately 11,260,000 CFA francs.
In an official statement, the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) confirmed that it had been informed of the decision rendered on January 14, 2026, by the CAF Disciplinary Committee. This procedure follows allegations against Samuel Eto'o during the Morocco/Cameroon match, played as part of the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
As a reminder, the match, played on January 9th at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Indomitable Lions. Furious with the refereeing, Samuel Eto'o lost his temper in the stands, loudly expressing his anger. His behavior attracted attention, even affecting the CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, and Fouzi Lekjaa, head of the Moroccan Football Federation, who were present. Several spectators had to intervene to calm the African football legend.
In its response, the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) considers the CAF's decision "devoid of any explicit justification" and suggests possible bias against Cameroon. The federation cites a climate of favoritism which, according to them, is detrimental to their national team.
Despite this sanction, Fecafoot affirms its full support for its president. It also announces that Samuel Eto'o intends to pursue all legal avenues available under the applicable regulations.
"The Federation acknowledges the decision of its President to initiate, within the prescribed time limits and procedures, the appeals procedures provided for by the regulations. It reaffirms its unwavering support for its President and its commitment to the principles of fair and credible disciplinary justice," the statement concludes.
This case has once again reignited the debate surrounding arbitration and governance in African football.
