CAN : Mohamed Salah, la grande star égyptienne toujours privée de sacre continental
Since the creation of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Egypt has established itself as the most successful nation on the continent with seven titles. This impressive record was built thanks to generations of legendary players who have left their mark on the history of African football. From Mahmoud Al Gohary to Hassan Shehata, including Mustafa Abdou, Mahmoud Ibrahim Al Khatib, Tahar Abou Zeid, Ahmed Hassan, Hossam Hassan, Hany Ramzy, and Mido, all have had the honor of lifting the continental trophy.
Yet, at the heart of this rich history, one anomaly persists: Mohamed Salah. Considered one of the greatest African players of his generation, the Liverpool striker has still not won the Africa Cup of Nations. A striking paradox, given how his influence and talent have propelled Egypt to the pinnacle of world football.
Salah, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, Champions League winner with Liverpool, and multiple Premier League champion, has won almost everything on the international stage and at club level. But the Africa Cup of Nations remains the major trophy missing from his collection. A runner-up twice, notably in 2017 and 2021, the Egyptian King has seen his continental dreams dashed each time at the final hurdle.
At 34, the Egyptian icon is still chasing that coveted first title. A quest that is becoming increasingly uncertain, as there's no guarantee he'll play in the next Africa Cup of Nations. Age, injuries, and competition could all play a role.
This lack of a continental title remains a real frustration for Mohamed Salah, but also for an entire nation that hopes to see him finally enter into legend like his illustrious predecessors. Winning the AFCON would be the ultimate consecration for someone who has already proven everything at the highest level, except on the African stage.
