CdM 2030 : L’idée d’un Mondial à 64 équipes relancée
While the first 48-team FIFA World Cup in 2026 has yet to deliver its verdict, FIFA is already considering a new revolution for the 2030 edition.
According to the Spanish daily AS this Thursday, the world governing body is seriously considering increasing the number of participants to 64 national teams at the 2030 World Cup.
This idea was reportedly revived following a request from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), which wanted to give greater visibility to nations rarely seen on the world stage. The aim would be to allow more emerging countries to participate in the most prestigious international football competition.
As a reminder, the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, will already mark a historic break with the increase from 32 to 48 teams.
According to the same sources, FIFA will wait until the end of this edition before starting concrete discussions on the organization and format of the 2030 World Cup, a tournament which could therefore reach a new and unprecedented milestone in the history of football.
