Chelsea : Mamadou Sarr, victime collatérale du départ de Liam Rosenior ?

For several days now, Mamadou Sarr's situation at Chelsea has been a subject of question. Promising and thrown into the deep end with his first start in the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, the 20-year-old Senegalese defender seems to have completely disappeared from view.

What initially appeared to be a gradual increase in his playing time has taken a more worrying turn. Recalled from his loan at Strasbourg this winter with the ambition of securing a regular place in the squad, Sarr hasn't played a single minute for Chelsea. Even more surprising, he is now consistently left out of the matchday squad, including for important games.

His absence against Manchester City two weeks ago had already raised questions. But the fact that he was also left out of the squad for the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United, which Chelsea won 1-0, this Sunday at Wembley, only adds to the uncertainty surrounding his status. This match, however, marks a turning point, as it is the first since the dismissal of Liam Rosenior, a manager who seemed to rely on him.

The timing is certainly questionable: is Mamadou Sarr indirectly paying the price for his former coach's departure? In many cases, a change of coach reshuffles the deck, sometimes abruptly. Sporting decisions then follow new logic, and certain players can suffer the consequences, regardless of their skill level or commitment.

However, according to internal reports, the defender continues to train diligently and displays an impeccable attitude. This professionalism contrasts sharply with his current exclusion from the squad.

It remains to be seen whether this situation is merely temporary or reflects a deeper trend. At a crucial age for his development, Mamadou Sarr needs playing time to live up to the expectations placed on him, particularly with the Senegalese national team, which is set to compete in the 2026 World Cup.

Chelsea will need to quickly clarify their handling of the case of the young Senegalese African champion, or risk hindering the emergence of a promising talent.
