Coupe de France : Moustapha Mbow et le Paris FC créent l'exploit face au PSG
A true earthquake struck the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. Two-time defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were eliminated in the Round of 32 of the Coupe de France by a heroic Paris FC (0-1). A historic victory for the newly promoted club, who secured a resounding revenge after their recent league defeat against their Parisian rivals.
Having been beaten a few days earlier on this same pitch (2-1, January 8th), the Paris FC players had clearly not forgotten. From the outset, they displayed clear intentions with a high press and total commitment that disrupted PSG's build-up play. The visitors even looked the first dangerous player. Gory capitalized on a poorly handled ball to unleash a low, angled shot, which Chevalier comfortably saved.
Awakened, Luis Enrique's men tried to respond. Barcola's cross-shot was deflected for a corner by an excellent Nkambadio, who was imperious throughout the match. The PFC goalkeeper distinguished himself again, first with a delicate lob against Ramos, then with a save from a Kvaratskhelia attempt. Despite these chances, PSG lacked inspiration and were thwarted by a very disciplined Parisian defense. At halftime, the score remained 0-0, at the end of a generally disappointing first half for the reigning champions.
After the break, PSG stepped up their game. Chances came thick and fast in front of Nkambadio's goal, who was in inspired form. Barcola missed the target, while the goalkeeper made a heroic save in a one-on-one with Dembélé, who had come on at the same time as Doué and Nuno Mendes around the hour mark. The pressure on the PFC defense became intense.
Against all odds, it was Moustapha Mbow's Paris FC who struck first. On a perfectly executed counter-attack, former Parisian youth player Ikoné beat Chevalier to open the scoring (0-1, 74th minute). A goal that silenced the Parc des Princes and ignited the fans' fervor tenfold.
Stung into action, the Parisians threw everything they had into the attack. Zaïre-Emery hit the crossbar with a cross-shot, while Doué missed a golden opportunity with a header in stoppage time. PSG pressed forward, but were constantly thwarted by a valiant defense and an impenetrable Nkambadio.
At the final whistle, Paris FC could celebrate. The newly promoted side had just pulled off a stunning upset by eliminating the two-time defending champions, causing a huge shock in this Coupe de France.
