Coupe du monde 2026 : Pierluigi Collina défend les arbitres face aux polémiques
The 2026 World Cup continues to be marred by numerous refereeing controversies. While several decisions made since the start of the competition have fueled debates among fans, pundits, and the media, the chairman of FIFA's Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, has broken his silence to defend the referees.
The former Italian international referee firmly rejected accusations that some decisions may have been influenced by outside pressure.
According to him, the independence and integrity of the referees involved in the tournament should be beyond question. "No one can call into question the integrity of the World Cup referees. No one can claim that the refereeing is influenced by anyone, not even the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino," said Pierluigi Collina.
This announcement comes in a particularly tense context, following several controversial refereeing decisions during the round of 16. One of the most discussed situations concerns the Folarin Balogun case, which sparked a heated debate and reignited criticism of the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Despite these controversies, Pierluigi Collina reaffirmed his confidence in the officials selected for the competition. He believes the referees are carrying out their duties professionally under immense pressure, where every decision is analyzed and debated globally.
As the World Cup enters its decisive phase, refereeing performances will continue to be closely scrutinized. FIFA hopes, however, that the statements from its head of refereeing will help to ease tensions and refocus attention on the sporting spectacle offered by the teams still in contention.
