Coupe du monde : « Cette élimination est un échec », tranche Édouard Mendy
Lions goalkeeper Édouard Mendy made no excuses after Senegal's elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. In a message posted on his social media, the Senegalese international bluntly described the national team's performance as a "failure" and called for a profound self-examination.
“This elimination is a failure. We had the qualities to go further. We didn’t do it,” says the Lions’ goalkeeper. Injured before the competition, Édouard Mendy explains that he did everything he could to return in time. “I gave everything to heal my injury and come back in time to help the team until the end, but it wasn’t enough,” he laments.
For the former Chelsea goalkeeper, the time has now come for a self-examination. "A competition of this level requires a deep self-assessment. Not a superficial self-assessment, but an honest and demanding work on everything that has been done: what allowed us to progress, but above all what prevented us from achieving our objective," he maintains.
Believing that "the truths that are inconvenient are often those that lead to the most progress", Édouard Mendy invites all actors in Senegalese football to learn from this disillusionment in order to get back on the path to performance.
"Senegal deserves a team and a federation capable of turning failures into lessons and lessons into victories. It is up to us to be worthy of it," the Lions' goalkeeper finally said.
