Débâcle des Lions – Ferdinand Coly cogne : « J’ai l’impression qu’on est...»
In an interview with L'Observateur, former Senegalese international Ferdinand Coly offered a harsh assessment of the Lions' elimination from the World Cup. He expressed deep bitterness at what he considers a setback for Senegalese football. "With all the effort made over all these years, all the achievements, I feel like we've gone backwards. That's a step backwards," he declared, believing that Senegal and Tunisia were the only two African teams to have regressed during the competition.
The former Lion first points to what he calls the amateurish management of the national team. He doesn't understand how Pape Thiaw could have played in a World Cup without a signed contract and criticizes the financial tensions that arose just hours before a match. For him, Pape Gueye's media outburst also reveals a deep-seated problem: "A player losing his temper isn't innocent," he asserts, denouncing an atmosphere incompatible with the demands of top-level football.
Finally, the former defender also questions several of the coach's choices. He believes that the handling of Kalidou Koulibaly's return from injury was a mistake, pointing out that the captain had been out of action for two months before the World Cup. "A weakened Koulibaly can't contribute anything," argues the source in the newspaper published by Groupe Futurs Médias, while also lamenting that, among the selected central defenders, only Moussa Niakhaté was truly competitive and that the young Mamadou Sarr wasn't used more.
