Just weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the traditional and solemn ceremony of presenting the national flag to the Lions of Teranga took place this Tuesday, May 26, at the Presidential Palace. Addressing the national team as they departed for the global competition, the Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a speech of guidance and encouragement. He focused his remarks particularly on the crucial role of the coaching staff, speaking directly to the national team coach.

Addressing the audience, the President of the Republic began by commending the extensive work carried out by the national technical staff. Speaking directly to the head coach of the Lions, he declared: “Mr. National Coach, I want to acknowledge your commitment and that of your staff. A World Cup is prepared away from the spotlight, through meticulous attention to detail, careful study, proactive planning, and effective human resource management—this invisible aspect of the work without which talent alone is insufficient.”

Continuing his explanation of the demands of high-level competition, the Head of State reminded Pape Thiaw of the magnitude of the mission entrusted to him for this global event: "You have in your hands a group of very high quality. You also have an important responsibility, that of leading this team with high standards, clarity and serenity."

Beyond the moments of popular jubilation, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized the sacrifices made behind the scenes to elevate Senegalese football to this level. "The public sees the matches. They see the goals. They see the saves. They see the celebrations. But behind these moments, there is organization, hours of work, decisions, travel, medical care, analysis, and silent sacrifices. I want the nation to also recognize this aspect of the achievement," he stressed emphatically.

To ensure the expedition's success, the Head of State reassured the entire delegation of the full commitment of public authorities throughout the competition. He reaffirmed that "The State of Senegal will be by your side. It will be there with seriousness, with consistency, and with a sense of responsibility."
