Election présidence FC Barcelone : les candidats s’arrachent le soutien de Lionel Messi

As the March 15th election approaches, tensions are rising in Catalonia. FC Barcelona's members are preparing to elect their new president in an electric atmosphere, marked by a battle for influence that is as much about media attention as it is about strategy.

Incumbent President Joan Laporta has a significant lead in the polls. His main rival is Victor Font, while Marc Ciria and Xavier Vilajoana complete the list of contenders, with a more limited chance of causing an upset.

They are all doing numerous interviews, meetings and making shocking statements to appeal to a demanding fanbase, still marked by the sporting and financial turmoil of recent years.

Huge promises regarding the transfer market

The first major campaign focus is on strengthening the offensive. Candidates are vying with each other in ambition, promising the arrival of an international star.

Xavier Vilajoana has put forward Harry Kane as a priority target. Victor Font, for his part, hasn't ruled out a move for the English striker or for Erling Haaland. Marc Ciria has also mentioned the Norwegian striker in his public statements.

Spectacular announcements aimed at reviving the enthusiasm of the members, but which raise questions about their economic feasibility.

Messi, the symbolic stake

Beyond the promises of recruitment, another name dominates the campaign: that of Lionel Messi. Not for a return to the pitch, but for an institutional or honorary role within the club.

Each candidate is trying to position themselves as the one who can reconcile Barça with its greatest player. Relations between Messi and Joan Laporta have cooled in recent years, fueling speculation about a possible reconciliation.

Marc Ciria went so far as to display a banner in the heart of Barcelona addressed to the Argentinian with the message: "Want to see you again." An initiative that, however, was reportedly not approved by the player himself.

According to the Spanish daily Marca, Lionel Messi disapproves of the repeated use of his image for electoral purposes. The Argentinian has reportedly been approached by several candidates to officially join their campaigns, but he has declined all offers.

His entourage insists he will not take any public stance and will not support any side. The now-famous sign displayed in the city was reportedly put up without his knowledge.

A clear message to club members: despite his immense symbolic weight, Lionel Messi will not be involved in this election. It remains to be seen whether his name, omnipresent in the campaign, will nevertheless influence the final vote.
