Espagne: Mbappé porte encore le Real Madrid à Oviedo, Villarreal nouveau leader
Already decisive last weekend against Osasuna (1-0), French striker Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice, led Real Madrid to a second victory in two La Liga matches on Sunday away to promoted Oviedo (3-0).
The French team captain, European Golden Shoe winner and top scorer in the Spanish league last season, was clinical to lead Real Madrid (3rd, 6 points) to victory thanks to a superb pivot sequence (37th, 1-0) then a perfect finish with his right foot from a Vinicius Junior pass (83rd, 2-0).
The Brazilian, who came on in the second half, put the nail in the coffin at the end of added time (90th + 3, 3-0).
The new number 10 of the Whites, who has confirmed his status as the leader of the attack at the start of the season, had the ball for a hat-trick at the tip of his foot but he came up against the opposing goalkeeper Aaron Escandell (85th).
Back in form after finally being able to recharge his batteries this summer, Mbappé, once again voted man of the match, drew praise from his coach Xabi Alonso:
"What has changed since the Club World Cup? Well, he's put back on the four kilos he lost. (...) He feels good and it shows. He's motivated and connected to the team, he has influence in the game. I really liked seeing him switch positions and be involved in defense in that way," said Xabi Alonso at a press conference.
For its return to the first division, 24 years later, the small club from Asturias will nevertheless be able to boast of having held its own against Mbappé and the Spanish giants for a large part of the match.
The teammates of Santi Cazorla, the former Arsenal playmaker who came on late in the match, could have even equalized just before Mbappé's double, but Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo hit the post of Thibaut Courtois (82nd).
The locals had claimed a foul from French midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni when he recovered Mbappé's opening goal (37th), but to no avail.
