"Ferme ta gueule!", l'altercation musclée entre Gattuso et un joueur israélien après Israël-Italie

At the end of an eventful evening which saw the Italians finally win (5-4) against Israel in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, tensions appeared between the two teams and in particular between the coach of the Nazionale, Gennaro Gattuso, who had an altercation with an opposing player.

Gennaro Gattuso continues to be talked about. After his vague remarks about being "sorry to face Israel," the Nazionale coach got into a tangle with an Israeli player following Italy's 5-4 victory on Monday in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers (June 11-July 19).

The wild match ended with tense scenes between the two teams in the center circle. While seemingly trying to calm the situation, Gennaro Gattuso was violently challenged by New England's MLS player Dor Turgeman. The Italian coach reportedly shouted "Shut your mouth!" at him before the two men were separated.

"Sorry to have Israel in our group."

The brief altercation came as Gennaro Gattuso had already caused controversy for his vague comments on the sidelines of the match. He initially declared that he was "sorry" about playing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the same group as Israel, which was interpreted on social media as a condemnation of Israel's devastating offensive in Gaza, in retaliation for the unprecedented bloody attack by the Palestinian Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023.

Before clarifying his thoughts on Sunday at a press conference: "I'm sorry to have Israel in our group, because they're a team that plays well and can cause us problems. As for the rest, we all know: it hurts to see what's happening, people and children losing their lives, I don't want to say more."

Italy back in the race for qualification

Having missed the last two editions after falling in the play-offs, Italy can still believe they can qualify for the 2026 World Cup thanks to this hard-won victory. And at the end of a crazy scenario that included two own goals from the Italians and a crazy end to the match where four goals were scored between the 81st and 90th+1 minute.

By securing their third consecutive victory in this qualifying campaign, the Squadra Azzurra players climbed to second place in Group I, which also includes Estonia, Moldova, and Norway. They are now three points behind the Norwegians, who beat them 3-0 in early June, which led to the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti and his replacement by Gattuso. During the next international break, the Italians will travel to Estonia (November 11) before meeting Israel, this time at home (November 14).
