Finales européennes : la Premier League impose sa loi sur l’Europe
The Premier League confirms its dominance over European football. This season, English clubs will be present in all three continental finals: Arsenal in the Champions League, Aston Villa in the Europa League, and Crystal Palace in the Conference League – a resounding demonstration of the power of English football on the European stage.
English football confirms its supremacy on the continental stage more than ever. This season again, the Premier League has placed its representatives in all three European finals, illustrating the financial, sporting, and tactical power of English clubs.
After Arsenal qualified for the Champions League final at the expense of Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace also secured their places in the Europa League and Conference League finals.
On Thursday, Unai Emery's Aston Villa delivered a dominant performance. Having lost 1-0 in the first leg, the Villans completely overturned Nottingham Forest's lead (4-0) with a resounding victory that secured them a place in the Europa League final, where they will face Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20th.
Meanwhile, Ismaila Sarr's Crystal Palace continued their incredible European run. After their 3-1 victory in the first leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, the London club secured another win, 2-1, at Selhurst Park to reach the Conference League final. The Eagles will face Rayo Vallecano, featuring Nobel Mendy and Pathé Ciss, on May 27th.
This English presence in all three finals confirms the Premier League's growing dominance over European football. For several seasons now, English clubs have dictated the pace thanks to deep squads, top-level coaches, and an intensity of play that is difficult for other leagues to match.
Last season, England came very close to a similar feat with Chelsea's Conference League title and the all-English Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United. Only Arsenal fell short in the Champions League semi-finals against the eventual winners, Paris Saint-Germain.
This isn't the first time the Premier League has dominated Europe in this way. In 2021, Chelsea won an all-English Champions League final against Manchester City thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz. Two years earlier, in 2019, Liverpool beat Tottenham in the Champions League final while Chelsea defeated Arsenal in the Europa League final.
These performances are reminiscent of the golden age of English football. Back in the 1980s, British clubs reigned supreme on the continent with European triumphs for Liverpool, Tottenham, and Ipswich Town.
Faced with this rise of English power, the other major European leagues are struggling to keep up. Italy managed to place clubs in every final in 2023, but without winning a single trophy. As for Spain, long the continental benchmark thanks to Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Atlético, it now seems to be losing ground to the English juggernaut.
With Arsenal, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in the final, the Premier League sends a strong message: European football now speaks English.
