Foot: Tottenham quitte la zone rouge en battant Aston Villa 2-1
Tottenham, a historic Premier League club, climbed out of the relegation zone after securing their second consecutive league victory on Sunday at Aston Villa (2-1).
The North London club, seventeenth with 37 points, relinquishes the first relegation spot to West Ham (18th, 36 pts), who were soundly beaten 3-0 the day before by Brentford.
Spurs and their coach Roberto De Zerbi, appointed on March 31, brought back a valuable victory from Birmingham in the quest for survival, their second in a row after the one against Wolverhampton (1-0) last weekend.
Randal Kolo Muani's teammates played with courage and high pressing from the start, and their good intentions were quickly rewarded.
Midfielder Conor Gallagher scored his first goal for Tottenham with a low shot from outside the penalty area (12th, 1-0), after a throw-in was poorly cleared by Aston Villa.
Richarlison doubled the score with a header from a well-weighted cross by French striker Mathis Tel (25th, 2-0).
Aston Villa, on the other hand, completely missed the mark. The Villans only managed one shot on target, a header from Emiliano Buendia which reduced the deficit in added time (90+6, 2-1).
Unai Emery's team, fifth with 58 points, missed the opportunity to overtake Liverpool (4th, 58 pts) who lost earlier at Manchester United.
This is their third consecutive defeat after the 1-0 losses against Fulham in the Premier League and Nottingham Forest in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.
