Football russe : Gianni Infantino plaide pour une révision des sanctions
FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently reignited the debate surrounding the sanctions imposed on Russian football since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Four years after the exclusion of Russian clubs and national teams from international competitions, the head of the world governing body believes these measures have not produced the desired results. In an interview with Sky News, Infantino expressed criticism of this policy of exclusion.
According to him, the ban on Russian football has not helped to ease tensions. "This sanction has solved nothing. It has only generated more frustration and hatred," he stated, thus opening the door to a discussion on the future of these restrictions.
Without announcing an imminent return of Russia to the international stage, the Swiss leader nevertheless called for discussions to begin. He defended the idea of preserving football's unifying role, particularly for younger generations. "We must allow Russian girls and boys to play football elsewhere in Europe," he emphasized, stressing the need to maintain dialogue through sport.
Gianni Infantino goes even further by proposing an evolution of international sporting regulations. "We should never prohibit a country from playing football because of the decisions of its political leaders," he argued, believing that sport must remain a bridge between peoples, even in times of crisis.
It remains to be seen whether this stance will influence UEFA, which is currently maintaining a hard line on the Russian issue.
