Gana Guèye : « Le score est très sévère, mais l’objectif reste la qualification »
Senegal suffered a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign, losing 3-1 to France on Tuesday. Despite the setback, Idrissa Gana Gueye refused to succumb to pessimism, believing the result didn't fully reflect the flow of the game.
In the mixed zone after the match, the Senegalese midfielder, speaking to Taggat, first sought to put this opening defeat into perspective. "First of all, we say Alhamdoulilah, we thank God. We started this match well. Unfortunately, in the second half, we conceded those goals. I think the scoreline is very, very harsh. But there you have it, it's a football match, it's only the beginning of the competition," declared the Lions' midfielder.
For Idrissa, this defeat should above all serve as a lesson for the rest of the tournament.
"This match will allow us to correct the mistakes we may have made and to be ready for the next game. That's the most important thing."
When asked about the turning point of the match, Gana Gueye pointed to the goals conceded immediately after the break. "What changed the game were the goals. We conceded them very early in the second half, and then we lacked a bit of rhythm to get back into the game. Yet, we had chances. In particular, Nico's goal was disallowed. If we had come back to 1-1, it could have changed a lot of things."
The Senegalese midfielder also praised the quality of today's opponent.
"There's no point in having regrets. We were playing against a very good French team, two-time World Cup finalists. That's not for nothing. They knew exactly what they were doing. We tried to play as best we could."
Despite this defeat, Senegal's objective remains unchanged: to get through the first round.
"The objective remains the same. We must first get out of the group stages. We still have two matches left and we need to prepare them well."
Regarding the adjustments to be made before the next match, Gana Guèye prefers to take the time to analyze.
"It's still too early to talk about it. We need to digest this result first, then we'll analyze the match to draw the necessary conclusions."
