Guerre au Moyen-Orient : L’équipe d’Irak dans l’incertitude avant les barrages du Mondial
The Iraqi national team is going through a particularly difficult period as they approach the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs. The Lions of Mesopotamia are theoretically scheduled to play a decisive match on March 31 against the winner of the Bolivia-Suriname tie. However, the current geopolitical situation in the region casts considerable uncertainty over the team's preparations.
According to several sources, the situation in Iran could also influence the qualifying format. A possible exclusion or withdrawal of Iran from the competition, due to regional tensions, could reshuffle the deck.
In this scenario, Iraq could benefit from direct qualification for the World Cup, while the United Arab Emirates would be forced to go through the playoffs.
However, the situation remains far from simple for the Iraqi national team. According to the British tabloid "The Sun," Iraqi airspace is currently closed for at least four weeks due to the security situation. This measure severely complicates the national team's travel: nearly 40% of the players are unable to travel.
Australian coach Graham Arnold is himself stranded in Qatar after several flights in the region were cancelled. Adding to the difficulties are administrative issues: some players and staff members still lack visas for the United States and Mexico, the host countries of the World Cup.
Between sporting uncertainties, logistical constraints, and geopolitical tensions, Iraq's preparation for these playoffs promises to be particularly chaotic. The Lions of Mesopotamia nevertheless hope to secure a second historic qualification for the World Cup, after their only appearance at the 1986 World Cup held in Mexico.
