Mounir Nasraoui, Lamine Yamal's father, is not too happy to see the 2025 Ballon d'Or slip away from his son in favor of Ousmane Dembélé on Monday evening. He believes the Catalan star is already on top of the world.
He didn't really like what he saw. Mounir Nasraoui attended the Ballon d'Or ceremony on Monday at the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris) to accompany his son, Lamine Yamal (18 years old), and his family. And the father of the FC Barcelona star expected to see him triumph by receiving the most prestigious of individual awards. But it went to Ousmane Dembélé, after the quintuple success with PSG, including the Champions League and very influential statistics on this consecration (35 goals, 16 assists).
"Moral harm to a human being"
After the ceremony, Mounir Nasraoui breezed past the Spanish media packed onto the red carpet. He simply offered a large dose of hope for the future. "Next year, he'll be ours," he said without stopping. But he expressed a more definite opinion in a telephone interview with the El Chiringuito program, in which he admitted he didn't understand the voters' choice.
"I wouldn't say it was theft, but rather moral harm to a human being," he said. "Because I believe Lamine Yamal is the best player in the world. By far... by far. Not because he's my son, but because he's the best player in the world, he has no rival. He's Lamine Yamal. Something very strange happened here. Next year, he'll be the Spanish Ballon d'Or winner."
Yamal consoles himself with the Kopa trophy
According to initial reports, Ousmane Dembélé was nonetheless the clear winner in the votes of 100 journalists (from the top 100 FIFA nations). "If I have to give you a trend, there was no contest, honestly," the magazine's editor-in-chief confided on L'Équipe channel Monday evening. "Ousmane won by a wide margin. He largely won the support of our Ballon d'Or judges. He's a Ballon d'Or winner who, a priori, carries authority with our judges."
Lamine Yamal didn't argue and showed himself to be a good sport by giving the French striker a hug at the end of the ceremony. He too was rewarded by receiving the Kopa Trophy for Best Young Player (ahead of Frenchman Désiré Doué) for the second consecutive year. "I won't forget my teammates, everyone helped me get here tonight. I'll have to keep working to win other titles in the future," he said after receiving this trophy, which clearly doesn't address the feeling of injustice his father harbors.
Lamine Yamal joined the ceremony as part of the FC Barcelona delegation led by president Joan Laporta, to the boos of Parisian fans gathered outside the venue to support Dembélé. He was accompanied by his teammates Pau Cubarsi and Raphinha. The club left the evening with several trophies, including the third consecutive Women's Ballon d'Or for Aitana Bonmati.
