«J’ai dit, "Monsieur l’arbitre, je vous jure que (Ziyech) va louper..."» : Les confidences de Stéphane Sessegnon sur le match Bénin-Maroc (CAN 2019)

In 2019, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was held in Egypt. Benin, drawn in a group with Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau, and Ghana, began the tournament with considerable apprehension. But their worries quickly vanished. Michel Dussuyer's men played three consecutive draws and qualified for the Round of 16. Standing in their way was the formidable Moroccan team, considered the favorites of the competition.

The Squirrels, considered underdogs before the start of the match, managed to hold their own against the Atlas Lions. They even opened the scoring early in the second half.

Ziyech misses his shot

Morocco equalized shortly after the hour mark and even had a chance to seal the victory in the 94th minute from a penalty won by Stéphane Sessegnon. Hakim Ziyech inexplicably missed his shot. Benin's hopes were rekindled.

In a recent interview with the beer brand "La Béninoise", Stéphane Sessegnon reveals that he had predicted the failure of the former Chelsea player.

"Even when there was a penalty, I went to see the referee and I clearly told him word for word: 'Mr. Referee, I swear he's going to miss,' and that's what happened," recounted the former attacking midfielder of Paris Saint-Germain.

"When Khaled got the red card, I said, 'That's it guys, we're going to win this match…'"

He said he was convinced his team would win the match. Even after defender Khaled Adenon was shown a red card in the 96th minute, that feeling didn't leave him. In fact, it only grew stronger.

“When Khaled got the red card, I said, ‘That’s it, guys, we’re going to win this match.’ And that’s exactly what happened,” recalls the former Sunderland player. Benin ultimately won the match on penalties but unfortunately lost to Senegal in the quarter-finals.
