James Kwesi Appiah, Coach Soudan: «On respecte le Sénégal, mais on ne le craint pas »
On the eve of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 match against Senegal, Sudan's coach, James Kwesi Appiah, remains calm despite the Lions' status as favorites. Aware of the difficulties his team faced during the group stage, the Ghanaian coach nevertheless refuses to succumb to fatalism.
“You might not perform well in the group stages, but once you progress in the competition, anything is possible,” he said. Drawing on his experience, Appiah pointed out that football history is full of examples of teams that were unassuming at the start of a tournament but capable of turning the tables in the knockout stages.
Having narrowly qualified for the round of 16, Sudan approaches this match with humility but also with determination. "We have a lot of respect for Senegal, but deep down, we mustn't let ourselves get discouraged. When you face a team like Senegal, you respect them, but you don't fear them," insisted the Sudanese coach.
For James Kwesi Appiah, the key lies in commitment and selflessness on the field. "The most important thing is to give your best and let the outcome of the match decide," he concludes.
