José Mourinho débarqué par Fenerbahçe après une année sans miracle
Portuguese coach José Mourinho, who arrived at Fenerbahçe last year to find new momentum after being fired by AS Roma, was dismissed on Friday after a trophy-less year in Istanbul.
The Turkish club, eliminated on Wednesday evening in the Champions League play-off against Benfica (1-0; 0-0 in the first leg), announced that it was parting ways with the "Special One", whom it had recruited in June 2024.
Struggling on the European stage, Mourinho also failed last season to get the Istanbul "Canaries" back to the league title, which has eluded them since 2014, the objective he had set for himself.
"Obviously, the main goal is to win the Super Lig," he said in response to a journalist's question upon his arrival in Istanbul, but he wished to make "zero promises" to supporters in need of trophies.
Far from his legendary arrogance, the "Mou", who had been welcomed like a rock star by Fenerbahçe supporters, had appeared defeatist in recent weeks in press conferences, his face closed, regularly reminding people of the limitations of his squad.
Leaving Istanbul empty-handed (37 wins, 14 draws, 11 defeats), the 62-year-old coach with an impressive past record (5 European Cups including 2 Champions Leagues with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010, 8 national titles) sees his aura fade even further.
Setbacks
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham manager, who is not currently expected to move anywhere, has also experienced several setbacks in Türkiye.
In April, he grabbed the face of rival Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk after a Turkish Cup derby loss.
The Portuguese had already been suspended for four matches and fined two months earlier for comments made after a league match against Galatasaray.
The "Special One" then accused the fourth official of the match - and through him all the Turkish referees - of favoring the three-time reigning Turkish champion Galatasaray.
The Portuguese, who had taken up residence in Istanbul in a luxurious Four Seasons hotel, could receive severance pay of at least 9 million euros, according to the Turkish press.
