Le jour de gloire pour le Cap-Vert? Les habitants autorisés à quitter le travail plus tôt pour regarder le match qui peut les qualifier pour la Coupe du monde 2026
With Cape Verde officially eligible to qualify for its first World Cup this Monday, residents have been allowed to stop work early so they can watch the match against Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) at 6 p.m.
This Monday, October 13th, could be a historic day for Cape Verde. Leading their qualifying group with one matchday remaining, the Blue Sharks can officially secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup this Monday after the match against Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland), which kicks off at 6 p.m. (French time). While a win is enough against the bottom team in the group, the entire country will be mobilized for the occasion. As reported by Marca, President José Maria Neves has declared a "special day." Residents are allowed to stop work at noon this Monday (3 p.m. French time) to watch the historic match that could qualify them for their first-ever World Cup.
If they qualify, Cape Verde would be the third newcomer to the competition after Jordan and Uzbekistan. The country, with a population of around 525,000, would become the second-smallest team in history to participate in a World Cup, behind Iceland in Russia in 2018, and the smallest team from its territory in history, surpassing Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Cape Verde would be the sixth country from the African zone to qualify
During this qualifying campaign, Cape Verde has suffered only one defeat, against Cameroon (4-1), for six wins and two draws, including the last frustrating against Libya (3-3) on October 8. Pedro Brito's players could have sealed their direct qualification last Wednesday, but an unjustified offside whistled in the final moments deprived them of victory (3-3). Enough to leave the Cape Verdeans with a lot of regret, as they were trailing 3-1 with 15 minutes left in regulation time.
Five teams have already qualified from the African zone: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and Ghana, which secured its spot on Sunday. The nine group winners will face Mexico, Canada, and the United States, while the four best runners-up will play a mini-tournament to determine the African nation that will compete in an intercontinental playoff.
