Senegal are crowned African champions. The Lions of Teranga put on a men's performance at the Moulaye Abdallah Stadium in Rabat, despite the crowd, last-minute absences, and disastrous refereeing. Here are the highs and lows of this already historic match in many respects.
The tops
Sadio Mané
In addition to his skill as a player, Sadio Mané has just shown that he is also a great man. Despite the referee's and VAR's incomprehensible decision, the Senegalese number 10 called all his teammates back onto the pitch. This decision ultimately paid off, as Morocco missed their penalty, and Pape Gueye scored the winning goal. Throughout the match, Mané was also exceptional. El Hadji Malick Diouf
The penalty conceded was the only blemish on his performance. Otherwise, the left-back delivered another defensive masterclass on his flank. He effectively neutralized Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz. The latter was barely involved except for the missed Panenka penalty.
Mamadou Sarr
What composure! Koulibaly's replacement was imperious in defense. In both his tackles and his distribution, Sarr was very clean. The future of the Senegalese captain is secure.
Pape Thiaw
Sadio Mané deserves praise for his gesture, but Pape Thiaw also deserves it. Regardless of the image Regragui criticizes him for, the coach had the courage to denounce subversive refereeing. Furthermore, the coach won his tactical battle against Regragui. His decision to bring on four attackers in the 77th minute caused some concern, but proved to be the turning point, allowing Senegal to regain their footing and dominate the remainder of the match against Morocco.
The flops
Arbitration
Walid Regragui criticized the Senegalese players for portraying Africa in a negative light to the world, but I maintain that it was referee Jean Jacques Ndala who tarnished Africa's image. The Congolese referee quickly awarded a non-existent foul on the disallowed Senegal goal, without even reviewing the footage. Two minutes later, pressured by the Moroccans, he consulted VAR to award a penalty to Morocco. After several controversial refereeing decisions throughout the tournament, his actions have revealed to the world the disastrous level of refereeing in Africa.
VAR
The referee can make a mistake, but what about VAR? Four officials, surrounded by cameras, rush to let the referee continue without calling him over to review the play between Seck and Hakimi. We've seen this before, like in Morocco vs. Tanzania or Morocco vs. Cameroon. And wouldn't you know it, when it's the host country, the referee is finally called over. We thought video review would save African refereeing from some bad decisions, but this match proves the opposite.
