Ligue 1 française : déjà 31 entraîneurs en 26 ans, l’OM un club ingérable ?
Despite being the most popular French club in Africa, Olympique de Marseille continues to search for its sporting identity. Far from its golden age of the 1990s, marked by the Bernard Tapie era and the historic Champions League victory in 1993, the Marseille club is struggling to establish itself permanently at the top of French football.
Despite finishing second last season, OM has never managed to maintain that level of performance consistently, both domestically and in Europe. Inconsistent results remain a constant, as illustrated by Sunday's heavy 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique. This humiliation was the final straw, precipitating the departure of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi, who was promptly dismissed.
This latest episode adds to an already impressive list. With De Zerbi's departure, Olympique de Marseille is about to appoint its manager in Ligue 1 since 2000, including interim managers. This staggering figure makes OM the most unstable club in the French top flight when it comes to the managerial position over the last twenty-six years.
This chronic instability raises a recurring question: Has Marseille become a difficult club to manage? Constant popular pressure, demands for immediate results, a heated media environment, and strategic choices that are often called into question have regularly brought down the coaches who have passed through the Canebière.
A telling fact: only one coach has managed to complete three consecutive full seasons at the helm of OM since the beginning of the century: Didier Deschamps. A powerful symbol of the club's structural difficulties in establishing a sustainable sporting project.
As the management prepares to open a new chapter on the Marseille bench, the question remains: will OM finally be able to break with this cycle of instability to rediscover the consistency and ambition that made it great?
