A hero of the night, but without fanfare, Viktor Osimhen surprised everyone on Wednesday by making no attempt at celebration after scoring the decisive goal in extra time against Juventus (3-2 aet). A crucial goal, however, as it secured Galatasaray's qualification for the Champions League round of 16.
Having had a remarkable European campaign (7 goals in 8 appearances), the Nigerian striker wanted to explain his attitude after the match.
For him, this silence was not insignificant. "I didn't need it. It's important to respect a man I admire and who has been important in my career," he said in the mixed zone, referring to Luciano Spalletti, the current Juventus coach who was his coach in Naples.
Osimhen also pointed to the team's performance, which was far from complete despite the favorable outcome. "We played very poorly, even with eleven against ten. So there was no reason to celebrate," he added, preferring sobriety to euphoria.
A strong choice, reflecting a leader focused on the essentials: qualification rather than individual demonstrations.
