Lions du Sénégal : «Le milieu tâtonne»
In an interview with Record, Keur Madior coach Alphou Cissé, nicknamed "Pep," gave a generally positive assessment of the group stage (D) of the Africa Cup of Nations (December 21, 2025 - January 18, 2026) in Morocco. With 7 points, 7 goals scored, and only one conceded, the Lions of Senegal managed to secure first place in their group.
Tactically, the coach noted that Pape Thiaw demonstrated adaptability. After using a 4-2-3-1 formation in the first two matches (a victory against Botswana and a draw against DR Congo), the coach of Senegal's senior national team switched to a more traditional 4-3-3 against Benin. This latter choice, resulting in a resounding 3-0 win, brought better balance to the team while also benefiting from the depth of a strong bench.
However, the midfield is "a slight disappointment" according to the sports daily's source. Once a major strength of the national team, this area remains unstable. Between poor form and a string of injuries, the midfield struggles to find fluidity despite the numerous tests carried out by the coaching staff.
Conversely, the defense and attack were reassuring. The back line, led by Kalidou Koulibaly and an imperious Édouard Mendy, lived up to expectations. The coach also praised the involvement of the other thirty-somethings in the squad: Sadio Mané and Idrissa Gana Guèye, who confirmed their status as key players and demonstrated seriousness and determination.
Finally, Pape Thiaw's management has been validated. Cissé emphasizes that Aliou Cissé's successor enjoys the full support of his players. Master of his substitutions and his message, Thiaw seems to be in control of a group ready to get down to business.
Senegal will kick off the round of 16 against Sudan tomorrow, Saturday.
