Mamadou Sarr de retour à Chelsea à cinq mois du Mondial : Cheikh Sidy Ba donne son avis
After a successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Senegal in Morocco, Mamadou Sarr is about to take another major step in his young career. The Senegalese centre-back will return to Chelsea just five months before the World Cup, a timing that has sparked questions and debate.
Recruited last summer by the London club for around 20 million euros from RC Strasbourg, Mamadou Sarr had played a few minutes (8 in total) in the Blues' jersey during the Club World Cup held in the United States in July 2025.
After Chelsea's victory in this competition, the player was loaned to Strasbourg to continue his development and gain playing time.
A risky bet before the World Cup?
His solid performances at the Africa Cup of Nations clearly convinced the London club's management, who decided to recall the defender earlier than expected. A bold choice, but one that raises questions with the World Cup approaching, especially given the fierce competition for places in central defense at Chelsea, with players like Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Axel Disasi, Benoît Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, and Jorrel Hato.
Faced with these questions, Cheikh Sidy Ba, former Senegalese international defender, delivered a reassuring and straightforward analysis.
"The risks are minimal."
"In football, there are always risks to take. But for me, they are minimal in this specific case," says the former LASK Linz player in Austria.
According to him, the context is favorable for Mamadou Sarr, particularly because he will be reunited with a coach who knows him well. "He'll be reunited with the former Strasbourg coach. This means that he needs him and intends to play him. If it were a coach who didn't know him, the situation would have been different," explains Cheikh Sidy Ba.
For the former Lions center-back, the early recall of Mamadou Sarr is a strong signal. "The coach may have assessed his squad, identified his needs, and knows what Mamadou Sarr can bring to the team. If he didn't need him, he would never have gone to Strasbourg to get him mid-season," insisted the former Jaraaf player.
A key role to play at Chelsea?
Cheikh Sidy Ba goes further, believing that this return reflects the coaching staff's complete confidence in the young Senegalese player. "If they decide to bring him back now, it's because they consider him an essential part of their defense, perhaps even the one their team was missing."
With the World Cup just months away, Mamadou Sarr has a lot riding on this. But given his current momentum and evident confidence, the gamble seems calculated rather than risky. The coming weeks will tell if this return to London will be a decisive springboard to the very highest level.
