Marathon de New York 2025 – Le Kenya domine, final de légende

"The best day of the year in the best city in the world."

This is how the New York Marathon is often described, an exciting sporting event that unites the cosmopolitan metropolis, even in times of fracture.

A day when New York transcends political, religious or social beliefs to celebrate together effort, diversity and community spirit.

An incredible finale, decided in the last hundredth of a second, for a double Kenyan victory.

Benson Kipruto won the men's race at the 54th New York City Marathon, edging out Alexander Mutiso by less than a second after a thrilling final sprint.

The two runners had broken away from the peloton at the 24th mile. Kipruto gained a few meters before Mutiso came roaring back in the last 50 meters.

Kipruto wins in 2h 08min 09s, Mutiso finishes a hair's breadth behind, while Albert Korir, the 2021 winner, completes the podium (2h 08min 57s).

In the women's race, Hellen Obiri achieved another feat, winning her second victory in New York and breaking the course record with a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes, 51 seconds.

The Kenyan athlete pulled away in the last mile from her compatriot Sharon Lokedi (2022 winner), also relegating the defending champion Sheila Chepkirui to third place.

The three athletes ran faster than the previous record set in 2003 (2 hours 22 minutes 31 seconds).

In wheelchair racing, Swiss Marcel Hug won his seventh title in New York – a record – while American Susannah Scaroni secured her third victory in the women's category.

More than 55,000 runners crossed the five boroughs of the city in a festive atmosphere, cheered on by more than two million spectators along the route.

An injection of energy from the crowd, which pushes the competitors to go all the way, to find within themselves the strength to cross the finish line.

This year, more than 200,000 people registered for the lottery to try and secure a place on the starting line of the marathon.

The draw, organized by the New York Road Runners, distributes the candidates between residents of the New York area, other American runners, and participants from around the world.

The successful candidates receive a confirmation message and their registration is automatically validated.

For the others, all hope is not lost: there are several ways to obtain a guaranteed place.

Some qualify thanks to an official time, others run for charity by committing to raise funds, while the most loyal members of the NYRR club can secure their race number by completing the “9 + 1” program: nine races and one day of volunteering.

Finally, approved tour operators offer packages including race bib, flight and accommodation to live this unique experience.
