Maroc : Walid Regragui aurait annoncé son départ aux joueurs
Walid Regragui's future as head coach of the Moroccan national team appears sealed. Expected to leave, the coach has reportedly bid farewell to his players, according to several sources. A significant chapter in the recent history of the Atlas Lions is thus coming to a close.
After several days of negotiations, the former Wydad coach's fate is now reportedly sealed. While the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially denied any resignation, sources close to the matter claim that an agreement has been reached between the two parties. The coach's departure is now merely a matter of official confirmation.
According to the media outlet Afrikfoot, Walid Regragui is no longer the coach of the Moroccan national football team.
Appointed in August 2022 to succeed Vahid Halilhodzic, the native of Corbeil-Essonnes (France) would not have survived the defeat in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, played at home and lost against Senegal (1-0, after extra time) on January 18.
According to journalist Jamal Astaifi, the coach has already packed his bags and informed the senior players of the imminent official announcement of his departure and his absence from the Moroccan bench during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19. This is a competition in which he had brilliantly led the national team to the semi-finals in 2022.
Tarik Sektioui's name keeps coming up as his successor. Having performed well at the helm of the A' team, notably with a double at the CHAN and a victory in the Arab Cup of Nations, he is considered the frontrunner to take over the senior team.
Mohamed Ouahbi, for his part, is expected to occupy an assistant role, with a mission focused on the bridge between the A team and young talents.
If his departure is confirmed, Walid Regragui will leave behind the image of a coach who made his mark, despite a painful end to his time at home.
