Mondial 2026: des manifestants font irruption dans un ministère au Mexique
Members of a dissident group from the teachers' union, the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE), vandalized a guard post, entered the courtyard and broke the windows of the entrance hall, according to sources within the ministry.
Images from Mexican television showed a small fire at the scene, which was brought under control by security forces.
"They want to provoke a crackdown on us in the run-up to the World Cup," said President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier in the day during her daily press conference. "We will not give in to provocation," she added.
The CNTE is organizing mass mobilizations in the lead-up to the tournament, which will begin on June 11 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. It is demanding a wage increase and the repeal of a pension law.
Since Monday, police have been blocking access to the Zócalo square, where the presidential palace and a place to watch World Cup matches live are located, using metal barriers.
On Tuesday, teachers toppled 5-meter-high statues representing football players from countries participating in the tournament, co-organized by the United States and Canada, without any intervention from law enforcement.
