Mondial 2026: une édition «à guichets fermés» et aux retombées record, selon Gianni Infantino

With the second phase of ticket sales having concluded in January, FIFA President Gianni Infantino assures that all 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup will be played to sold-out crowds. Boasting record demand and unprecedented enthusiasm, the event also promises spectacular economic benefits for host countries, particularly the United States.

The 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup will be played "in front of sold-out crowds," FIFA boss Gianni Infantino assured on Wednesday, even though there are still tickets available before the start of the competition on June 11.

"The demand is there, every game is sold out," Mr. Infantino told CNBC, as the second phase of ticket sales ended in January.

According to him, there were "508 million requests (for tickets) in four weeks for approximately seven million tickets available, coming from more than 200 countries worldwide."

"We've never seen anything like this, it's incredible," exclaimed the head of the world football governing body, stressing that FIFA had "reserved tickets for the last-minute sales phase" which will begin in April and last until the end of the World Cup on July 19.

He revisited the price of tickets, described as "exorbitant" by supporters' associations and which also reached record highs on resale sites.

"It's like having 104 editions of the Super Bowl in one month," the final of the American football championship, the most-watched sporting event in the United States, "and obviously that has an impact on prices," he said.

Sustainable economic impact

"Ticket prices have been fixed, but you have, particularly in the United States, something called dynamic pricing, which means that prices increase or decrease" depending on demand and the match lineup, explained Gianni Infantino.

"You can also resell your tickets on official platforms, the secondary market, and prices will go up even more. That's part of the market," he added.

For this unprecedented World Cup (48 teams and three host countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico), he estimated FIFA's revenue at "11 billion dollars, maybe a little more." But "every dollar is reinvested in football in the 211 affiliated countries," he assured.

He also estimated the World Cup's impact on the American economy at "around $30 billion in terms of tourism, catering, security, investments, etc."

According to him, in addition to the seven million spectators, the World Cup will also attract 20 to 30 million tourists and create "185,000 full-time jobs".

"This will have a huge effect (...) and I hope that this effect will not be limited to the World Cup but (will continue) in the future," said Mr. Infantino.
