OG Anunoby: La troisième étoile indispensable pour NY

The New York Knicks flew to Philadelphia with a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals of the NBA Playoffs, but the celebration after their 108-102 victory was tempered by the image of OG Anunoby heading to the locker room prematurely. With 2:31 remaining, Madison Square Garden held its breath as the forward stopped abruptly mid-cut, wincing in pain as he clutched the back of his right leg.

The diagnosis is now in: Anunoby has a right hamstring strain. According to ESPN, he is officially listed as questionable for Game 3 this Friday. While his condition is being evaluated daily, this injury brings back painful memories for New York fans, recalling his extended absence during the 2024 playoffs for a similar reason.

For much of the evening, and indeed these playoffs in general, Anunoby was the solution to all the Knicks' problems. With the big men quickly finding themselves in foul trouble and Mitchell Robinson already sidelined, the British star of Nigerian descent stepped up. He didn't just fill a void; he dominated the game on both ends of the court.

For months, the Knicks' narrative centered on the duo of Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns. But as the spotlight intensifies in the playoffs, a third star has not only emerged, but has often even eclipsed the other two. Anunoby has become the indispensable link between New York's fighting spirit and its championship ambitions.

He didn't just maintain his regular season level; he reached a new peak of excellence. Confirming his reputation as the league's best two-way player, his playoff transformation became the guarantee the team needed. His impact is further supported by staggering numbers: during this campaign, he averaged 21.4 points with a true shooting percentage of 75.5%, a record for a player of his caliber in the postseason.

Before his forced absence, his performance in Game 2 was a true demonstration: 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. The statistical impact of his absence is significant, with the Knicks posting a net rating of +20.2 when he's on the court in the postseason.

Jalen Brunson emphasized after the game that Anunoby is the game-changer, capable of creating chaos on defense while making the right decisions on offense. For his part, Karl-Anthony Towns insisted that it's impossible to replace what OG brings with just one person.

Coach Mike Brown will likely need Mikal Bridges and Miles McBride to step up if Anunoby can't play in Philadelphia. The Knicks have proven they can win hard-fought games, and with this two-game cushion, they have a bit of breathing room.

However, if they want to reach the heights the city dreams of, they need their "guarantee" to return to the court as soon as possible.
