Fired from Rennes six days after the defeat in Marseille
The first incident occurred on February 3rd. Then managing Rennes, he suffered a heavy defeat against Marseille (3-0) in the Round of 16, a loss that significantly weakened his position as his team was mired in a run of poor results. Several reports indicated major clashes with his goalkeeper, Brice Samba, following a long ball that led to a Marseille goal. While he initially denied these reports, the coach nevertheless dropped the French international from the squad for the very next match in Lens (3-1).
This choice contributed to the team's struggles, as the young backup goalkeeper, Mathys Silistrie, had been in poor form. This defeat in Pas-de-Calais precipitated his dismissal a few days later, on February 9th, in an atmosphere that had become untenable. But the former Senegalese international didn't take long to bounce back. Two days after the announcement of his departure, OM parted ways with their coach, Roberto De Zerbi, and Beye immediately became the favorite to succeed him. His appointment was officially confirmed the following week, on February 18th.
Since then, the former Red Star coach has managed three matches on the Marseille bench: a stunning victory against Lyon (3-2), a defeat in Brest (2-0), and this elimination from the Coupe de France, which had been a top priority. "The disappointment is as great as the hope that was placed in us for this match and this Coupe de France campaign," he declared after the game. "When you have the opportunity in two matches to reach a final... we had to win this one first. So, the disappointment is as great as the hope that was placed in us, and we have to accept it. That's what I told my players. In this situation, we have to look ahead, face it, and accept the anger, the disappointment, and the sadness of our supporters who were with us throughout the match and during the penalty shootout."
