Play-offs NBA: les Knicks retrouvent la finale pour la première fois depuis 1999

The New York Knicks qualified for their first NBA final since 1999, after dominating the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 on Monday in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Jalen Brunson and his teammates, who have now won 11 games in a row in these playoffs -- a current franchise record -- swept the Cavs 4-0 in this best-of-seven series.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Knicks, while OG Anunoby added 17 points. Off the bench, Landry Shamet scored 16 points, going perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.

"We'll enjoy this for a day or two, but we have a more ambitious goal to achieve and we need to get back to work seriously," Shamet said. "We still need four more wins and we know it's going to be even harder."

The Knicks, whose only NBA titles date back to 1970 and 1973, will face either Victor Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs or the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the finals starting June 3, who are currently tied 2-2 in the Western Conference finals.

On Cleveland's home court, where they were fighting for their lives, New York showed no mercy, stifling the Cavs with fast breaks and a solid defense.

Brunson, unanimously voted MVP of the series, and Mikal Bridges each scored 15 points for the Knicks.

"The players we have assembled (...) are simply great people, and they are obviously excellent basketball players," reacted their coach, Mike Brown.

Brunson's father was the Knicks' point guard the last time they reached the NBA Finals, when Jalen was only two years old.

"It means a lot to me, but I wouldn't be here without my teammates, without the faith they've shown in me," Brunson said. "This coaching staff, this organization, these fans... Without them, none of this would be possible."

"They give me the necessary confidence. They let me be myself. And above all, we all believe in each other, at every level. It's an honor to play with them," he added about his teammates.

The New York franchise finished the first quarter with an 8-0 run, before starting the second with a 12-0 run to take a comfortable 50-26 lead.

In the third quarter, New York definitively pulled away to crush Cleveland's "comeback" dreams.

The Cavaliers, led in scoring by Donovan Mitchell with 31 points, may well harbor regrets for having let the first game of the series slip away.

They were leading by 22 points with 7:52 left in regulation time, but the Knicks managed to come back and take control of the series for good.

"I'm disappointed for the team," commented Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson. "We want to live up to expectations. This was disappointing."

"We have taken a step forward. We must continue to progress. We must move forward," he said.
