Qualifications Coupe du monde 2026 : Les entraîneurs africains s’imposent sur la scène mondiale
A wind of change is blowing through African football. Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has highlighted a strong trend: African nations are now placing their trust in their own coaches.
Of the nine teams already qualified for the World Cup, seven are led by national coaches. This unprecedented figure reflects a real change in mentality on the continent, long accustomed to relying on "white wizards."
Names like Pape Thiaw (Senegal), Walid Regragui (Morocco), Hatem Trabelsi (Tunisia), Bubista (Cape Verde), Emerse Faé (Ivory Coast) and Otto Addo (Ghana) illustrate this rise in power of African technicians. These coaches have proven that they can compete with the best, taking their national teams to the highest level.
This change of direction is explained by the convincing results recorded in recent years. The example of Walid Regragui, semi-finalist of the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, or that of Emerse Faé, winner of the 2023 CAN with Côte d'Ivoire, has paved the way for renewed confidence in local skills. The success of Pape Thiaw at the helm of the Lions or the strength of Otto Addo's Ghana confirm this dynamic.
And the trend could continue. The play-off tournament, the first stage of which will be played in November 2025 in Morocco, will see four nations compete for the last qualifying spots. Among them, Nigeria, led by Éric Chelle, and Gabon, led by Thierry Mouyouma, also count on African coaches. If one or both of these teams secure their ticket to the World Cup, the proportion of African coaches at the biggest event in world football will reach a historic level.
More than just a trend, this is a true cultural revolution taking place. Africa finally believes in its sons. The continent's technicians are no longer mere temporary workers or default choices; they are now the architects of success.
