Quand Edouard Mendy stoppait la Panenka de Kun Aguero
Brahim Diaz's missed penalty in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco continues to be a hot topic in the Western press. In a recent article, Marca claims that the Real Madrid striker certainly wouldn't have opted for a Panenka penalty had he watched the Chelsea vs. Manchester City match in May 2021.
"A bad decision"
During that match, the Spanish sports daily recalls, Edouard Mendy, then goalkeeper for Chelsea, saved a Panenka penalty from Argentinian striker Sergio Kun Agüero. The Senegalese goalkeeper remained firmly planted, cleanly deflecting the loose shot from Maradona's son-in-law. In a message published after the match, Agüero apologized to his teammates, the coaching staff, and the fans.
He said he had made "a bad decision." His coach, Pep Guardiola, quite frustrated, nevertheless defended him to reporters: "He's selfish because he missed the goal. If he had scored, we would have said he was a genius. Nobody expected it, but it's not a big deal."
