Real Madrid : Un ancien défenseur du club prend les commandes de l’équipe
Real Madrid wasted no time. Just hours after the announcement of Xabi Alonso's departure, the Madrid management officially revealed the name of his successor. It's a familiar face at the Bernabéu: Álvaro Arbeloa.
In a statement released this Monday, the club first confirmed the end of its collaboration with Xabi Alonso, highlighting an amicable separation:
"Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been agreed to end his tenure as first-team coach. Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid supporters, as he is a Real Madrid legend and has always embodied the values of our club. Real Madrid will always remain his home."
The Madrid club also praised the work done by the Spanish coach and his staff, wishing them every success for the rest of their careers.
Following this, Real Madrid officially announced the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach of the first team. At 42, the former defender takes another step up after proving himself within the club's youth academy.
Arbeloa, coach of Real Madrid Castilla since June 2025, has been involved with the club as a coach since 2020. He successively managed the Infantile A team during the 2020-2021 season, winning the championship, then the Cadette A in 2021-2022, before taking the reins of the Juvenile A between 2022 and 2025.
His time in youth football was marked by brilliant results, including a historic treble in the 2022-2023 season (league, Copa del Rey and Champions Cup) as well as another league title in 2024-2025.
Former iconic right-back for the club, Álvaro Arbeloa wore the Real Madrid jersey between 2009 and 2016. During this successful period, he played 238 official matches and won eight major trophies, including two Champions Leagues, one La Liga, two Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup.
On the international stage, he also made history with the Spanish national team, winning the 2010 World Cup as well as Euro 2008 and 2012. He has 56 caps for La Roja.
