Sénégal - Mali : L'étonnante statistique de l'arbitre Tom Abongile en élimination directe
South African referee Tom Abongile has been appointed by CAF to officiate the Senegal vs. Mali quarter-final. Having already refereed two matches at this AFCON, Abongile is now officiating his third tournament and will be officiating his third knockout match in this quarter-final. During the previous two matches, one statistic caught our attention at Seneweb.
Indeed, Tom Abongile was the referee for the Egypt-DR Congo Round of 16 match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and also for the Mali-Tunisia Round of 16 match in that same edition. The unusual aspect of both matches is that they both ended in penalty shootouts.
For this match, the Lions of Teranga will try to defy the odds and win by the end of regulation time. Mali, for its part, has yet to win after 90 minutes. The Eagles emerged from their group with three draws before defeating Tunisia on penalties (a result technically considered a draw based on the statistics).
It's worth noting that, outside of the Africa Cup of Nations, Tom Abongile refereed another international knockout match: the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff between Gabon and Nigeria. The match didn't go to penalties, as the two teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time. Nigeria emerged victorious in extra time.
