Serie A: A Senegalese prodigy steals the show in his first start for Cagliari

Serie A : Une pépite sénégalaise crève l’écran pour sa première titularisation avec Cagliari

In his first-ever Serie A start, Paul Mendy didn't hold back. Starting for Fabio Pisacane in Monday's victory against Atalanta, for the 34th matchday, the young Senegalese striker from Cagliari delivered a dazzling performance.

It only took the 19-year-old a few seconds to make his intentions clear. In the first minute, Mendy opened the scoring, before repeating the feat in the 8th minute, securing a quickfire brace to give his team an ideal start.

A dream start for the player who was making his first start in the Italian top flight, after several appearances off the bench in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, this perfect evening was cut short. Physically injured, the young Senegalese player had to leave the field at the start of the second half.

This impressive performance confirms the rise of an already very promising player. Before gradually integrating into the first team, Mendy had distinguished himself with the Sardinian club's Primavera team, having scored no fewer than 14 goals with the U20s. This efficiency earned him the confidence of the coaching staff and the signing of a new contract in March 2026.

A native of Rufisque, the young striker honed his skills at Salam Academy Foot and AS Bambey, where he had already distinguished himself in the Senegalese Ligue 2. Signed by Cagliari in February 2025, he has continued his rapid rise, culminating in his professional debut last March against Napoli.

With such an entrance as a starter, Paul Mendy sends a strong message.
