Back in 2023, Al-Hilal had already made a major move by approaching Messi after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain. While the player was receptive to the offer, his family ultimately swayed him towards a move to Florida. Al-Ittihad then also entered the fray, but without success.
Even today, Al-Ittihad president Anmar Al Haili makes no secret of his ambition to convince the former Barcelona striker. In comments reported by Marca, the Saudi executive revealed the amount of money he would be willing to spend to secure the services of the 2022 World Cup winner.
“If Messi agrees to sign with Al-Ittihad, I will offer him a contract where he can earn whatever he wants, for as long as he wants, even for life,” he confided. Anmar Al Haili even claims to have already made an astronomical offer to the Argentinian at the end of his contract with PSG: “I offered him 1.4 billion euros.”
Despite this staggering sum, Messi reportedly declined, prioritizing the well-being of his family above all else. "He refused this amount for the sake of his family. He didn't hesitate, because family is more important than money. I greatly respect this decision," added the president of Al-Ittihad.
Still full of admiration for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, Anmar Al Haili assures that the club's doors will remain wide open to him: "Al-Ittihad will always be happy to welcome him. He can come back whenever he wants."
For the Saudi leader, signing Messi would go far beyond the financial aspect: "His presence in our shirt would have no economic value for me. We would celebrate the title even before the start of the season, because we would have the best player in the history of football."
It remains to be seen whether Saudi Arabia will ever manage to attract Lionel Messi, who is now fully committed to his American adventure.
