Un international togolais se brise le cou contre un panneau publicitaire et risque d’être handicapé à vie
Guangxi Pingguo's Togolese international Samuel Asamoah broke his neck during a Chinese league match after hitting his head on a billboard. The 31-year-old is facing lifelong disability.
Television footage showed Samuel Asamoah trying to shield his body as the ball flew towards the touchline on Sunday during a Chinese second division match between his club Guangxi Pingguo and Chongqing Tonglianglong.
The 31-year-old Togolese player was then pushed from the shoulder into the back by a running opponent. In the shock, he dove headfirst into a backboard a few meters from the goal line and tried in vain to cushion the blow with his hands. A serious injury that could lead to paralysis for the footballer, who has six caps for Togo.
"A detailed examination by the medical team and the hospital has diagnosed Samuel Asamoah with dislocation and fractures of (various) cervical vertebrae, as well as vertebral blockage," accompanied by "nerve compression," the Chinese club said in a statement the day after the match. "He risks severe paraplegia and will miss all remaining matches of the season. His career could also be seriously affected."
The footballer underwent "successful" surgery on Wednesday at a hospital in Nanning, the club said in a new statement. "Samuel Asamoah is recovering from the operation and his condition is stable," it added, without giving further details on the possible evolution of his condition. The player who pushed him in the back was given a yellow card.
