The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) now have a face: Ayo.
Unveiled by the Head of State at an official ceremony, this majestic mascot, a proud and smiling lion, embodies courage, wisdom, and unity. It stands as the powerful symbol that Senegal wishes to convey to the youth of the continent through this historic event.
A Lion Rooted in Senegalese Culture
Ayo is more than just a character; he is a true embodiment of national identity.
National Symbol: The lion, central figure of the coat of arms of Senegal, represents the nobility and quiet strength of a resilient people.
Cultural Heritage: Ayo proudly sports a traditional Fulani cap, an iconic headgear often worn by shepherds in the north of the country, highlighting the event's roots in Senegal's cultural diversity.
A participatory creation led by young people
The project was resolutely focused on the new generation. Ayo's name and design are the result of a national competition that mobilized hundreds of Senegalese students, aged 12 to 18.
The young winners of the competition were officially celebrated at a moving ceremony at the Grand Théâtre in Dakar, in the presence of dignitaries, including President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the President of the IOC, Kirsty Coventry. This powerful initiative aims to place youth at the heart of the Dakar 2026 organization.
Historic Youth Olympic Games on African soil
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will be held from October 31 to November 13, 2026. This will be the first edition in the history of the YOG to be held on the African continent.
To enhance geographical diversity and utilize infrastructure, the competitions will take place at three strategic sites: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
