«Le Sénégal vous paie pour…» : tensions gendarmes-policiers, le gros coup de gueule d’un officier en retraite
Retired Lieutenant Mbaye Sady Diop, former Director of Public Relations for the police, spoke to L'Observateur about the incident that pitted police officers against gendarmes last Saturday in Keur Massar. A dispute over jurisdiction led to a confrontation between officers from both forces. As a result, two police officers were arrested and taken to the Keur Massar gendarmerie before being released a short time later.
Mbaye Sady Diop first pointed out that such incidents are recurring: “A few days ago, soldiers went to a police station to free one of their own. In Mbacké, police officers and gendarmes staged a spectacle over the occupation of a checkpoint on a public road. The list is far from exhaustive; similar cases abound.”
The retired lieutenant doesn't understand why such incidents are so frequent: "I believe nothing can explain it. I can't find any explanation for this kind of behavior. [...] Every time the two units are deployed on a mission abroad, they behave and act like brothers and friends. What then explains the fact that upon their return to Senegal, disagreements erupt?"
According to the former head of police public relations, "the primary responsibility lies with the local authorities. I'm not talking about the top brass of the police or the gendarmerie, but especially those in these areas. They must talk to each other, coordinate, hold meetings, and organize regular gatherings for the good of the people."
In any case, "it's time for the hierarchies of the various forces to put an end to this charade," suggests Mbaye Sady Diop. Addressing the police and gendarmes directly, he adds: "It's not when we're hearing almost daily reports of violent robberies in hotels, factories, and on university campuses that you're going to fight over checkpoints. Fight by tracking down criminals and protecting us. Senegal pays you to ensure the safety of its citizens."
