Aux Etats-Unis, le meurtre choquant d'une réfugiée ukrainienne agite le débat politique
On August 22, she was stabbed to death on a streetcar in Charlotte, in the eastern United States. Since then, the murder of the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee has taken on a political dimension, with the American right denouncing Democratic complacency amid a heated debate on crime.
"The blood of this innocent woman can literally be seen dripping from the killer's knife," Donald Trump commented on his Truth Social platform on Monday, after seeing the footage of the murder.
"And now his blood is on the hands of Democrats who refuse to put bad people in prison," the US president added.
The young blonde woman left Ukraine in 2022 following the Russian invasion and "quickly adjusted to her new life in the United States," her obituary explains.
Her life was cut short minutes after she sat down on the tram, according to chilling CCTV footage, which shows a man boarding and sitting behind her before stabbing her three times without any prior exchange.
The suspect, Decarlos Brown, a 34-year-old African-American man, has multiple previous convictions, including eight years in prison for armed robbery, according to court documents obtained by local station WBTV.
First reported by the North Carolina press, the murder of Iryna Zarutska only gained national attention over the weekend, when the initial reaction of the Democratic mayor of Charlotte came to light.
The latter, Vi Lyles, sent her "thoughts and prayers" to the victim's loved ones, without naming her, but referring to the alleged killer's long-standing mental health problems.
"I want to be clear, I am not demonizing those who struggle with their mental health, or who are homeless," the mayor said.
Then, after the CCTV footage was released, Vi Lyles asked the media on Friday not to broadcast it "out of respect for Iryna's family."
His statements provoked an outcry on the right, even within the Trump administration.
"The mayor of Charlotte doesn't want the media to show you the ugly truth. Why? Because she and other public officials in her city bear their share of responsibility," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Sunday.
Stephen Miller, a close advisor to Donald Trump, particularly on immigration, accused the Democratic Party of organizing itself around the "defense and protection of criminals, monsters, and the depraved."
Their reactions are part of the American president's desire to make the fight against crime a top priority, especially in large cities run by Democrats, accused of laxity. To this end, he has sent National Guard soldiers to the capital Washington, which he says is overrun by "violent gangs," and is threatening to do the same in Chicago, the third largest city in the country.
Others on the right blame the progressive media for deliberately suppressing the murder of Iryna Zarutska because the victim is white and the alleged perpetrator is Black.
Elon Musk, the world's richest man and a former ally of Donald Trump, has published numerous messages on the subject and supported a post which states that "white people are victims of violence by black people at disproportionate rates."
Popular conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk also made a big splash about the affair.
"If an average white person simply walked up and stabbed a nice, decent Black person, it would be an absolutely huge national story, used to force radical political change across the country."
An apparent allusion to George Floyd, a black man who died of suffocation in 2020 under the knee of a white police officer, and whose murder sparked a wave of anti-racism protests a few months before the presidential election lost by Donald Trump to Joe Biden.

Et George Floyd, Eric Garner (I can't breath), Philando Castile, etc etc
